Dance through the looking-glass - the performance

on Wed, 07/11/2012 - 12:41

To dance is to communicate. As a dancer you communicate with your audience. This may be the most obvious communication for most people as we tend to think of dance as a performing art. However, there are at least three other partners present with whom to communicate when you dance: the other dancers, your surroundings, and the music.

Stories that never end

Ever since I was a child I’ve been fond of fairy tales. These stories captivated me I don’t exactly know why but I always liked the mysterious creatures and the discovery of new worlds. One particular fairy tale I discovered when I was already an adult. This was the mystery of mysteries:Die unendliche Geschichte (The never-ending story) by Michael Ende. The story is beautifully told and it completely absorbs you. What’s more, it reminds me of evolution, the compelling story of life’s history.

Die unendliche Geschichte relates the adventures of an unhappy boy Bastiaan who escapes in a book.

C'est toujours l'âge du Bronze

As a biologist I'm not particularly interested in stone tools or pottery. That's probably why I had forgotten about the fact that many years ago I actualy unearthed pottery. That was in 1988 when I was working in a cave on Sardinia. I was still very young then. A biology student on her first dig. My first real experience in excavating was in hall 1 of the Corbeddu cave (so named after a notorious bandit who hid there a hundred years ago). This hall was near the entrance of the cave. The sediment was red breccia and we were digging with screw drivers.

Leave me alone!

When I sit behind my desk, I have a nice view from my window. There's nothing special outside, just a road and houses. But there are also two large trees just in front of my window and regularly I can watch birds landing on the branches. This is how I got to witness a little dispute between two jackdaws from a front row seat

The first one was sitting on a branch minding her own business when the other one sat right next to her (I obviously don't know their sexes, but for this story let's assume the first one was a female and the second a male). He started to fondle her neck with his bill.
